I see an ad for a Winchester '73 that has a letter B suffix after the serial number (260xxxB) It appears a standard '73 but the letter is a new one on me. I'm sure you folks that are knowledgeable in this area could tell me it's significance.

I believe they went through 'C'. So you find '73s with no suffix, and suffixes 'A', 'B' and 'C'. Exactly what changes were involved, I don't know, though real Winnie collectors do. I know I have seen what they (the changes) were, but do not recall and don't have source data that might be helpful handy. Even though we moved 9 years ago, there are books still in storage - or shelved away from the 'puter.

On serial numbers after 80,000 the letter 'A' may be found and after serial number 100,000 the letter 'A' almost always accompanies the number. The 'A' continued up into the 170,000 range but up in the late 190,000 range both 'A' and 'B' appear but after number 200,000 the 'B' predominates. The letter had no significance as to caliber or other major variations but was simply a factory work mark denoting minor changes. I am not familiar with any '73's that have a suffix of 'C' but that certainly does not mean that they don't exist. The gun in question would have been made in 1888.
